The life of a Christian is a call to fellowship with God. God in a man. The Holy Spirit is the Advantage of the Christian.
To really experience the depth of the power and influence of the Holy Spirit requires that you spend time with Him and build your relationship with Him. One of such ways of doing so is to spend time in prayer. Here we are not referring to those short short prayers many tend to pray when they are in a hurry to rush out of the house to attend to their daily activities, nor are we referring to the short periods of prayer we participate in during church programmes.
The secret is having personal times of fellowship with the Holy Ghost.
Take for example magnetism. A non-magnetic metal/object can become temporarily magnetic (and attract other metals) if you place a magnet on it for a period of time. The influence of the magnet stays on it for a while. Similarly to continually experience the influence of the Holy Spirit in your life as a Christian requires that you spend time fellowshipping with Him.
We see so many examples in the Bible:
Jesus prayed
Luke 11:1 (ASV)
And it came to pass, as he was praying in a certain place, that when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, even as John also taught his disciples.
The disciples noticed something about Jesus; they realized that He spent time to pray and when He stepped out into the towns and crowds miracles began to happen that is why they asked Him to teach them to pray.
Elijah prayed for several hours for change in the land
1 Kings 18:42-44 (NLT)
42 …But Elijah climbed to the top of Mount Carmel and bowed low to the ground and prayed with his face between his knees.
43 Then he said to his servant, “Go and look out toward the sea. ” The servant went and looked, then returned to Elijah and said, “I didn’t see anything. ” Seven times Elijah told him to go and look.
44 Finally the seventh time, his servant told him, “I saw a little cloud about the size of a man’s hand rising from the sea. ” Then Elijah shouted, “Hurry to Ahab and tell him, ‘Climb into your chariot and go back home. If you don’t hurry, the rain will stop you! ‘”
Apostle Paul prayed a lot in tongues
1 Corinthians 14:18 (KJV)
I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
There are some depths in God you can only experience through long hours of fellowship with the Holy Spirit and God’s word. And for this to happen you must consciously make the time and put in effort to do this.
1 Corinthians 2:11 (TLB)
No one can really know what anyone else is thinking or what he is really like except that person himself. And no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit.
Ephesians 6:18 (MSG)
In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out.
Don’t stop praying.
